To satisfy these needs Microsoft created the WMV file which was a compressed video format that, at the time, was lightweight and efficient and met their original requirements. Microsoft had wanted a standard video format that could play across all their different devices and operating systems and could even be used to stream videos over the Internet. A WMV file is commonly known by its full name - Windows Media Video.
